Damned - Save the River Kelani - A Portrait Collection

This project was chosen primarily as a vehicle to create awareness, a visual journey into the world of water sports and the threat to its continuation in Sri Lanka. A few months back construction work started on the Broaderland Power Project, damming out the Kelani river section which runs through Kitulgala, a station for water based adventure activity in Sri Lanka. This in turn has become a threat to the world of water based activity sports such as white water rafting, with the potential of leaving more than 1000 river guides (Full time and part time) without jobs, 80 – 90% of whom hail from Kitulgala itself. Through my numerous journeys to Kitulgala, I have seen the passion and love they possess for these activities. I’ve seen amazing transformation of mere village boys transforming into fully fledged river guides of international standard. This is my photographic homage to them and the unique world of water-based adventure they bring to our lives. Enjoy :)
